1970 then and now
Basel gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt started the Art Basel fair in 1970. Already a success in its inaugural year the fair attracted 16,000 visitors who viewed works presented by 90 galleries from ten countries. By its fifth year the show attracted 300 exhibitors and 37,000 visitors. Over the years, Art Basel has expanded to include fairs in Miami, Hong Kong, and Paris.
Basel, the founding home of the fair is Switzerland's third-most-populous city (after Zürich and Geneva). The 2024 art fair is scheduled for June 13th to 16th. and will take place at the Swiss exhibition site Messe Basel, featuring a hall designed by international architects Herzog & de Meuron of Basel.

Art Basel’s is divided into sectors. Each sector has a specific focus, from monumental works to solo presentations by emerging artists.

Messeplatz Project
Visit the site-specific presentation by Moroccan, Swiss-based artist Latifa Echakhch, and curated by Samuel Leuenberger. In addition to viewing the deconstructed stage - which stands as a symbol of wreckage and ruin from which we can contemplate the hopes and possibilities within - take in the series of live concerts and performances organized in collaboration with Luc Meier, Director of La Becque Artist Residency.
