1970 then and now

Basel gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt started the Art Basel fair in 1970.  Already a success in its inaugural year the fair attracted 16,000 visitors who viewed works presented by 90 galleries from ten countries.  By its fifth year the show attracted 300 exhibitors and 37,000 visitors.   Over the years, Art Basel has expanded to include fairs in Miami, Hong Kong, and Paris.

Basel, the founding home of the fair is Switzerland's third-most-populous city (after Zürich and Geneva).  The 2024 art fair is scheduled for June 13th to 16th. and will take place at the Swiss exhibition site Messe Basel, featuring a hall designed by international architects Herzog & de Meuron of Basel.

Making it easier to navigate the collections of 200 galleries, and 4,000 artists participating in the fair, Art Basel’s is divided into sectors. Each sector has a specific focus, from monumental works to solo presentations by emerging artists.

Galleries

Explore the galleries in the main sector to find modern masterpieces by the worlds most prestigious contemporary artists, and young talents. Participating in the 2024 show are galleries from Europe, Africa, North America, Latin America, and Asia.

Unlimited

This is the sector to visit if you want to see large, monumental works of art.  Unlimited is curated by Giovanni Carmine.

Feature

A step back in time, Feature focuses on works of 20th century artists.

Statements

Enjoy a fantastic encounter with emerging artists vying for the renowned Baloise Art Prize.

Edition

Here you will find the galleries and publishers who deal in fine art prints, limited editions, and multiples.

Paracours

Step outside the halls of Messe Basel to encounter site specific works of art on public display in the town of Basel.

Kabinett

Many galleries setup a separate section within their booth to showcase themed works of art, solo presentations and historical showcases.   The Kabinett places works of art in a more thematic grouping.

Film

Venture into this exciting sector to watch films created by artists and featuring artists. Film is curate by Filipa Ramos with Marian Masone.

Messeplatz Project

Visit the site-specific presentation by Moroccan, Swiss-based artist Latifa Echakhch, and curated by Samuel Leuenberger.  In addition to viewing the deconstructed stage - which stands as a symbol of wreckage and ruin from which we can contemplate the hopes and possibilities within - take in the series of live concerts and performances organized in collaboration with Luc Meier, Director of La Becque Artist Residency.
